IF IT MOVES, BLESS IT

Thursday 14th October 2010 9.45am for 10.30am
at Birmingham Cathedral

The Very Revd Charles Taylor
Dean of Peterborough
Canon David Kennedy
Chair of Praxis, member of Liturgical Commission and Canon Precentor of Durham Cathedral

Ever been asked to ‘say a prayer’ over a necklace, a sound system, a new church loo, a youth leader or even (‘can we do this, vicar?’) a newly adopted god-parent? If so, you may have been driven to reflect about the whys and wherefores (or the theology and practice) of responding to such requests for blessings, commissionings and dedications. People do, though, increasingly seem to be asking for such prayer. Why and how should we respond, and where, if anywhere, find the words?

Our speakers will encourage us to be theologically and practically imaginative, as well as pastorally sensitive, as we consider together what we think we’re doing and why, discuss new ideas and good practice, and attempt to identify or create appropriate text resources.

Bookings to:

The Reverend Ian Pearson
18 Shrubbery Avenue

Event after this:

Thursday 17th March 2011
9.45 am for 10.30 am
at
Birmingham Cathedral

Rites on the way round.

Bishop Lindsay Urwin
Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham
Mr Nick Chavasse
Director of Tourism for Coventry Cathedral

A day to explore the theology and practice of pilgrimage, and pilgrimage liturgies in their various forms.

The idea of pilgrimage, of making a journey for the purpose of drawing closer to God is deeply embedded in the Christian culture. Some pilgrimages, such as journeys to Rome or the Holy Land, take place over significant distances, whilst others, such as the Palm Sunday procession, are much more local. What is it that we think we are doing when we set out on any journey as a Christian congregation? Why is it that certain places hold special significance? What are the theological principles which inform us, and how does it work in our own context?

With the guidance of Bishop Lindsay, Nick Chavasse and others, we will think about how procession and pilgrimage works, not only in big pilgrimage centres, but also in local parish settings, taking into account the particular challenges of ministry in ecumenical settings, multi-parish settings and those places where the building seems to work against us.

You can book on-line for this as well now.
